The Vermilion Bird is an ordinary bird, but in China, there is a long myth about it.In ancient China, the celestial realm appointed four divine guardians to protect the mortal world. Among them was Zhuque, the Vermillion Bird, a magnificent creature whose scarlet feathers embodied fire and rebirth. This is the story of its eternal vigil over the southern lands.
Birth from Flame
When the southern realms languished in perpetual twilight, the Jade Emperor commanded the fire god Huo Jun to create a beacon of warmth. From solar flames and terrestrial embers, Huo Jun shaped a magnificent avian form. Thus Zhuque emerged, its plumage blazing in crimson and gold hues. As it soared across the heavens, life blossomed beneath its wings - rivers flowed anew and crops flourished, transforming the south into a prosperous paradise.
Trials of Fire
Zhuque's guardianship faced its first challenge when the venomous Jiaoguai serpent poisoned the land. The phantom serpent withered crops and sickened villagers with its shadowy presence. Zhuque descended in a shower of embers, engaging the creature in a celestial duel. Though the serpent dodged its fiery assaults, Zhuque ultimately unleashed its inner flame, reducing the creature to ashes. Each such confrontation weakened the divine bird, yet its resolve to protect never wavered.
Celestial Alliance
During Zhuque's recovery, the moon goddess Chang'e appeared in a silvery manifestation. "Your light dims with every battle," she observed, her voice echoing lunar wisdom. Moved by the guardian's dedication, she bestowed upon Zhuque the moon's eternal radiance. This cosmic covenant granted the Vermillion Bird renewed vigor, its flames now tempered with celestial resilience that glowed brighter with each passing night.
The Final Confrontation
The ancient spirit Hei'an, embodiment of famine and decay, awakened to challenge Zhuque's dominion. His corrupting touch blackened rivers and blighted harvests. The ensuing battle illuminated the heavens as fire clashed with shadow. Despite lunar enhancements, Zhuque struggled against the primordial darkness. In a ultimate sacrifice, the guardian plunged into Hei'an's core, its celestial form erupting in a purifying conflagration that consumed both combatants.
Eternal Rebirth
As villagers mourned their fallen protector, dawn revealed a miracle - from the ashes emerged a single ember that swelled into Zhuque's rejuvenated form. This phoenix-like rebirth cemented its legend as an eternal guardian. The people instituted annual festivals with lanterns and bonfires, celebrating the cycle of destruction and renewal that their protector embodied.
Through millennia, Zhuque's legacy endures in crimson silks and festive fires. Though unseen for centuries, farmers still scan the skies during hardships, believing their celestial guardian awaits the call to rise again from flames, ever watchful over the southern realms it calls home.
