Plumerias are colorful flowering plants admired for their abundant blossoms and sweet fragrance. Their flowers are especially well known for their use in Hawaiian leis, and they are generally easy to grow in the climate of Southern California.

With so many varieties available, there is an enormous range of flower colors and fragrances, making it difficult to keep track of them all. Pink, yellow, and white varieties tend to be among the easiest to cultivate, while red and bicolored types may require somewhat more attention. With a few basic care practices, Plumerias can remain healthy and produce plenty of flowers.

Providing the Right Amount of Sunlight

In coastal parts of Southern California, Plumerias can usually be grown in direct sunlight without significant problems. In inland locations, however, some protection is beneficial.

A partially shaded or sheltered position can help prevent the leaves and stems from becoming scorched. Providing some shade can also reduce the risk of sun scald developing on the stems, especially under intense inland sunlight.

Watering Plumerias Properly

Plumerias are remarkably tolerant of dry conditions and can survive with very little water. Even if a gardener occasionally forgets to water the plant, it can generally withstand the lack of moisture.

Too much water is a far more common problem. Plumerias can store considerable amounts of moisture in their stems and branches, allowing them to remain resilient in hot gardens and containers.

Because of this natural ability to retain water, it is important not to overwater these plants. Allowing the soil to dry between waterings is generally much safer than keeping it constantly wet.

Choosing Well-Drained Soil

Plumerias should be planted in a growing medium that drains quickly. A cactus potting mix is a simple and effective choice because it provides the drainage these plants need.

Heavy soils can retain excessive moisture around the roots and increase the risk of root rot. If the existing soil is dense or poorly drained, improve it by incorporating peat moss and perlite. These amendments can help increase aeration while also providing greater acidity.

Winter and Cool-Season Care

As temperatures drop during the cooler seasons, Plumerias naturally begin to lose their leaves. This seasonal defoliation is a normal part of the plant's growth cycle and does not necessarily indicate a health problem.

During this dormant period, keep the plants in a protected location where they will not be exposed to freezing temperatures. Watering should also be greatly reduced.

Allowing the soil to remain dry during the cooler months is acceptable. Depending on conditions, watering approximately once a month or even less may be sufficient while the plant is dormant.

Fertilizing at the Right Time

Feeding Plumerias does not have to be complicated. An all-purpose organic fertilizer can provide the nutrients they need for the upcoming growing season.

Apply the fertilizer in late February, before the plant naturally comes out of dormancy and begins producing fresh foliage. Providing nutrients at this stage helps support the new growth that follows the dormant period.

Maintaining the Proper Soil pH

The acidity of the soil can play an important role in successful Plumeria flowering. For the best blooming performance, the soil should generally have a pH between 5.5 and 6.0.

An acidic fertilizer such as Nourish Bio Sol can be used to help lower the soil pH and create conditions that encourage stronger flowering.

With suitable sunlight, careful watering, fast-draining soil, appropriate seasonal protection, and the right soil acidity, Plumerias can thrive and reward gardeners with colorful, fragrant flowers.
