Guinea pigs can be wonderful companions for many different types of families. They are gentle, small, and full of unique personalities, and nearly every guinea pig is irresistibly adorable. Before bringing one into your home, there are several important things to know that can help you decide whether a guinea pig is the right addition to your family.

Is a Guinea Pig the Right Pet for Me?

Will a Guinea Pig Want to Spend Time With Me?

Absolutely. Guinea pigs can become familiar with their human caregivers, show excitement when they see them, and enjoy spending time with the people in their household.

Are Guinea Pigs Good With Children?

Guinea pigs can be a good choice for families with children who want a small companion. However, like other small animals, they are delicate and can become frightened easily. An adult should always supervise children and teach them how to handle a guinea pig safely.

It is also important to remember that children may eventually lose interest in caring for a pet, even if they initially adore these adorable little animals. Ultimately, adults are responsible for making sure guinea pigs continue to receive proper care, attention, and affection.

Are Guinea Pigs Low-Maintenance Pets?

Guinea pigs require regular care and are not considered low-maintenance animals. An individual guinea pig can produce waste as many as 100 times a day, so their living area needs to be spot-cleaned every day to keep it clean and comfortable.

Are Guinea Pigs Quiet?

Guinea pigs are generally fairly quiet, but they are not completely silent. They can become very enthusiastic when they see their favorite people or receive treats, and they often make sounds to let their caregivers know they are around.

When Are Guinea Pigs Awake?

Guinea pigs remain active during both the daytime and nighttime. They are usually not especially loud after dark, although they may move around and run in their enclosure. Instead of sleeping for one long period, they tend to take short naps between periods of activity and mealtimes.

Can People Be Allergic to Guinea Pigs?

It is possible for someone to have an allergy to guinea pigs. However, people are more commonly allergic to hay or pollen, both of which are important components of a guinea pig’s diet and environment.

How Do Guinea Pigs Get Along With Other Pets?

Guinea pigs generally do not have a problem with the presence of other household pets. Nevertheless, they should never be allowed to interact with animals of another species without supervision because there is always some degree of risk involved.

How Long Do Guinea Pigs Live?

A guinea pig typically has an average lifespan of approximately five to seven years.

Guinea Pig Needs

A Guinea Pig Companion

For the most part, guinea pigs need another guinea pig as a companion. They are highly social animals and naturally live together in groups in the wild.

To avoid accidental pregnancies, guinea pigs should generally be housed with companions of the same sex unless the animals have been spayed or neutered.

Plenty of Floor Space

Guinea pigs enjoy having plenty of room where they can move, explore, exercise, and play. They need a large area of uninterrupted floor space because they are ground-dwelling animals rather than climbers.

A pair of female guinea pigs should have approximately 7.5 square feet of continuous floor space, while a pair of males requires around 10 square feet of uninterrupted floor area.

An Abundant Food Supply

Guinea pigs spend a great deal of their time eating, so they should always have appropriate food available. They should have unlimited access to timothy hay or orchard grass, along with approximately one cup of vegetables each day.

Offering a wide variety of vegetables is beneficial, and providing vegetables in different colors and varieties can add diversity to their diet. High-quality guinea pig pellets can also be included, but they should be offered in moderation. Each guinea pig should receive about 1/8 cup of pellets per day.

A Reliable Water Supply

Like all animals, guinea pigs need continuous access to fresh water. Water bottles are convenient because they can be attached to the side of an enclosure and are easy to refill, but the water can occasionally become stuck inside the bottle.

A water dish provides guinea pigs with a more natural way to drink, although dishes can be somewhat messier and may require additional cleaning.

Consider Adoption

Rather than purchasing a guinea pig from a pet store and contributing to greater demand for these small animals, prospective owners are strongly encouraged to consider adopting one or even two guinea pigs from a local animal shelter.

Shelters such as HRA frequently have guinea pigs available for adoption, giving these animals an opportunity to find loving and responsible homes.
