Double Flowered Japanese Kerria is a striking spring-flowering shrub known for its bright golden, fully double blooms, slender upright stems and fresh green foliage. The plant creates a cheerful display in the garden with its fluffy yellow flowers appearing along colourful branches during the spring season.

This shrub spreads naturally through suckering, eventually forming a dense and attractive group planting. It works especially well when planted in clusters in areas with partial shade and can develop into a tall landscape feature.

Growth Habit and Landscape Features

Double Flowered Japanese Kerria is a deciduous shrub with multiple stems and an upright, spreading growth pattern. Its fine branches and delicate texture add softness and visual interest to garden designs, making it an excellent choice as an accent plant.

Although beautiful, this shrub requires regular maintenance and care. Pruning should be carried out only after flowering has finished, as cutting earlier may remove the flower buds that produce blooms for the current season. Deer generally avoid this plant, making it a useful option in areas where deer browsing is a concern.

Flowers and Foliage Characteristics

The plant produces eye-catching double yellow flowers along its branches from early to mid spring. These rounded, fluffy blossoms create a bright seasonal display.

The foliage consists of light green deciduous leaves that provide a fresh appearance throughout the growing season. In autumn, the narrow leaves change to a lemon-yellow colour before falling. The smooth bark and vivid lime-green stems continue to add decorative value even when the plant is not in bloom.

Size and Growth Rate

At maturity, Double Flowered Japanese Kerria typically reaches around 7 feet (about 2 metres) in height and spreads approximately 6 feet (about 1.8 metres) wide. It often has a slightly open or leggy form, with the lowest branches beginning about 1 foot above the ground.

This shrub grows at a moderate pace and, under favourable growing conditions, can live for 40 years or longer. Its height and structure make it suitable for planting beneath utility lines and in areas where a medium-sized shrub is desired.

Light and Soil Requirements

Double Flowered Japanese Kerria adapts well to a wide range of light conditions, growing successfully in both full sun and full shade. However, it generally performs best in locations with consistent moisture and partial shade.

The plant prefers average, evenly moist soil but does not tolerate areas where water remains standing. It is not especially demanding about soil type or pH level and can grow in a variety of garden soils.

Environmental Adaptability

This shrub has excellent tolerance for urban conditions and can grow well even in areas with air pollution, including city gardens and inner urban landscapes.

Double Flowered Japanese Kerria is a selected cultivar of a species that originated outside North America, bringing unique ornamental qualities to gardens with its colourful stems, bright flowers and adaptable nature.
